SMASH at the Gardiner Museum, Toronto

Home to some 4,000 ceramic objects, the Gardiner Museum, on June 21, hosted its third edition of Smash, the annual young-patron-focused fundraiser – a party where, for one night, exquisite Ming Dynasty porcelain and pieces of magnificent Meissen mingle with the work of contemporary Canadian creators. New at the event this year was a partnership with George Brown College’s integrated media program: 20 graduating students contributed original digital installations that were selected as part of a design competition conceived in part by Jacquelyn West, art director of this year’s Smash. “We Are More,” was the theme of the evening and through installations by a plethora of artists, including Sabrina Ratté and Camille Jodoin-Eng, which dotted the museum’s three floors and spilled onto the terrace, the power of connection in our digital age was explored. The sold-out event, presented by RBC Wealth Management, saw 400 or so young givers in attendance, and alongside the art, DJ sets and performances, including one by Langston Francis.

SickKids Scrubs in the City, Toronto

The annual Scrubs in the City, a beloved summertime fundraiser for Sick Kids, was held a couple of weeks earlier at Evergreen Brick Works. The event has raised more than $5.7-million in its 17-year history and this year 1,200 party-goers packed the former brick factory for an evening billed as a Roman Holiday. Co-chaired by fundraising duo Molly Fitzpatrick and Lucinda Kogan, the event was relaxed – just drinks and dancing – making for a fun night that raised $820,000. These funds will support the $1.3-billion SickKids VS Limits campaign to build a new hospital for which $570-million in philanthropic donations and pledges has already been secured.
