The ‘Merica burger

Bacon lovers rejoice. What's better than a burger made with 50 per cent bacon? A burger that's all bacon.

California burger joint Slater's 50/50 is known for its half-beef, half-bacon burgers. But to celebrate Independence Day, the restaurant decided to up the ante, unveiling a Burger of the Month that is 100 per cent ground bacon.

The 'Merica Burger is also topped with a layer of bacon, a sunny-side-up egg, a new "bacon island dressing" and – the pièce de résistance – bacon cheddar cheese.

The comments on Slater's 50/50 Facebook page range from joy ("The gods have answered our prayers.") to gluttony ("how about bacon in the bread?!?!") to mild discomfort ( "My chest hurts just looking at the picture.") And if you're salivating, you better hurry to a Slater's 50/50 location quickly; this artery-clogging burger is only available for the month of July.

Bacon's leap from a lowly breakfast food to a put-it-in-everything ingredient has fascinated, and disgusted, many people. There's the reasonable, like using bacon to make a chicken wing glaze, and then there's the questionable, like using it to top a sundae.

And bacon's application doesn't end with just food. There's even bacon-flavoured lip balm and Baconlube.

It seems society's appetite for bacon is insatiable and companies are responding with increasingly bizarre products. Are these bacon-themed goods just novelties? Probably. But life's short and when you love bacon, you just can't resist.

Would you eat a burger with a 100 per cent bacon patty? Is there any product bacon can't make better?
