It was a marriage so entwined with Twitter; it was only fitting that when Demi Moore announced Thursday her marriage to Ashton Kutcher was over, the social media site lit up and the couple became a trending topic.
First up, the sign that the break-up was real? Ashton's following list.
"Demi and Ashton have confirmed it's over by unfollowing each other," as one Twitterati typed.
Next order of business? How long would Ms. Moore's Twitter handle @mrskutcher last? (Lucky for her it's not a tattoo.)
As Tim Molloy writes, in choosing the cozy married-lady moniker, Ms. Moore was embracing Mr. Kutcher's love of the medium. Now, after a series of infidelity rumours and an official split, it "remains a sad reminder of the marriage that was."
The couple's marriage only predated the founding of Twitter by about 6 months and they embraced it as tightly as they did each other.
Mr. Kutcher "famously became the first person to reach 1 million Twitter followers in April 2009 after challenging CNN in a race to the landmark," reports Mr. Molloy.
The actor – aka @aplusk – has since hit more than 8.3 million followers, reports Mr. Molloy, while Ms. Moore has more than 4.2 million.
The pair were known for sharing titillating personal thoughts and photos, including one of Ms. Moore bending over in a bikini with the caption " Shhh don't tell wifey."
Fans who hovered over the pair's profiles Thursday were rewarded with a statement from Mr. Kutcher – who had recently stepped back from Twitter after making ill-advised comments about the firing of Pennsylvania State football coach Joe Paterno.
"I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi," he tweeted. "Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail. Love and Light, AK."
To which, one Twitterer wrote in response: "Do her a favor and keep it off twitter. Some things should be private."
And celebs complain about the paparazzi.
