As it turns out, not every day is vodka day. A collection of low-budget websites and corporate press releases have branded Oct. 4 as National Vodka Day, apparently in hopes of encouraging mass consumption of the tasteless, but powerful, beverage.

Although it may sound completely made up, days and months dedicated to various foods and other products, groups or other issues are actually declared by the U.S. government, through an intricate and somewhat-dubious sounding process described in detail here.

It would seem the main intention of such efforts is to push product and make money. Lounges and bars throughout the U.S. are capitalizing on the occasion by offering special vodka cocktails while online mixologists are suggesting their best recipes for the perfect vodka drink. Vodka Day doesn't seem to be getting as much attention at bars in Canada, but there's always next year.

However, National Vodka Day did manage to become a trending topic across Canada on Twitter throughout the afternoon.

For instance, Lainey Lui of LaineyGossip fame tweeted her discontent over not being informed of the day's special significance earlier, saying "why am I only finding out just NOW that it's NATIONAL VODKA DAY??? Please. You don't have to tell me twice."

Today isn't only about vodka, though. It also happens that this year's ode to vodka falls on the same day as National Taco Day. We know what we're having for dinner.
