If you want to save your bacon, better freeze truckloads of it now.
Pork industry forecasters are predicting a global bacon shortage by next year, CBS News reports.
That could mean scarce BLTs and champagne prices for bacon 'n' eggs, not to mention a dearth of bacon sundaes, bacon popcorn and bacon marmalade.
The cured meat's recent trendiness is not to blame. Climate change is the culprit – or whatever is causing the highest temperatures on record. Pig farmers in Europe and North America are culling their herds in response to the summer drought that killed feed crops across the Midwest, CTV reports.
By next year, the pork supply in the U.S. will drop to the lowest per-capita rate since 1975, notes Bloomberg News. As the pork supply dwindles, prices are expected to skyrocket.
It has already happened to peanut butter – another casualty of recent droughts – with prices up by more than 50 per cent since last year.
