So maybe proposing at that dive bar while the Super Bowl played on an HD screen behind her wasn't such a great idea?

Even though they may have said yes, 26 per cent of brides lament that their proposals weren't romantic, original, personalized or private enough, according to a joint survey from Men's Health and TheKnot.com, an online wedding planning resource.

With proposal season in full swing (that's November to February, according to the The Knot), the publications surveyed 3,000 men and women.

One in four women complained about the proposal. One major problem? It was too "over-the-top."

Another was the engagement ring, or lack thereof: 33 per cent of brides said proposing without a ring was the biggest proposal mistake -- and beer can tabs don't count.

Ring or no ring, men appear to be sticklers for tradition in one department: 76 per cent of guys said it was crucial to propose on bended knee, while only 49 per cent of women agreed. (Maybe that has something to do with privacy part.)

As for that other seemingly archaic proposal tradition - asking both Mom and Dad for their daughter's hand in marriage - 57 per cent of men said it was a must, compared with 63 per cent of women.
