Witherspoon weds in colour: Should brides always wear white?

As if channelling her character Elle Woods from Legally Blonde, Reese Witherspoon opted for a pale pink wedding dress when she got married late last month.

The 35-year-old Oscar winner's decision to forgo the traditional white dress when she married talent manager Jim Toth in California has been met with praise on several wedding blogs.

"Love the coloured dress trend. I wanted an ice blue one but found my options were limited. I wish more designers would offer cool tones," one commentor wrote on

"I love light champagne wedding dresses. They seem so vintage and regal," another wrote.

Still, there's always the pull of tradition.

"Weddings are a time to say pretty in white! It's so romantic and exhilarating," one wrote, with another poster expressing their enthusiasm by simply declaring "Pretty in white for weddings!!!!"

Even though white is still the preferred colour for wedding dresses, more designers are offering dresses in other colours, according to, with one Toronto designer even telling the website that she is getting requests for dresses in shades of chocolate brown, green, chartreuse and hot pink.
