Villa Rockstar

The Treatment

Eden Rock St. Barth commands the most spectacular site on Saint Barthélemy, a quartzite promontory cleaving St. Jean Bay into a pair of dramatic white sand crescents. This iconic beach is the most divine spot for a lazy, postbrunch massage in the resort's private spa cabana. Like everything here, the spa culture is laid back and at the guest's own pace and fancy; treatments can be enjoyed in the spa cabana, on the beach, or in your suite. I check into the resort's infamous Freddie Mercury suite at Villa Rockstar, boasting the most blinged-out bathroom I've seen yet – hundreds of 24-carat white gold tiles encircle an oval stone Boffi bathtub big enough for two. With plenty of room to set up a massage table in the suite, melting into a beauty treatment in this one-of-a-kind designer gem is what spa dreams are made of. I recommend the Kansu Bowl Massage as it's very rare to find on any spa menu, let alone on a tiny island in the French Caribbean. Traditionally, children in India massaged their elders with the kansu bowl, made of an alloy of three metals: copper for heat control, zinc to aid the digestion and bronze for stability.

The Benefits

This traditional Ayurvedic massage focuses on the arms, face and plantar arch of the foot, and is performed with a bowl of extraordinary vibrational properties. The treatment diminishes nervousness, leading to a sensation of calm, and improving the metabolism.

The Spa

Chic and doting owners David and Jane Matthews have made this the island's most fashionable address, where even celebrities come to people-watch. Greta Garbo once checked in under the name Suzy Schmidt for a weekend and became so enamoured with the ambience that she ended up staying three weeks. This legendary hotel still exerts a magnetic pull on such celebrities as Tom Hanks, Mick Jagger and Lorne Michaels. Sarah Jessica Parker and Gisele Bundchen apparently enjoy shopping at the hotel's boutique, which is more mini-Bergdorf Goodman than mere gift shop. At the 34-suite Eden Rock, big shots flock to the 16,000-square-foot, three-level Villa Rockstar, which features four master suites, Rimadesio furnishings, a Shiffini kitchen, screening room, gym, private office, dining facilities for 12 people, swimming pool, hydrotherapy pool, a billiards table, and a full-time butler. Open the garage to find designer surfboards, a Mini Cooper and Harley Davidson at your disposal. Ultimate amenity? John Lennon recorded Imagine on the console that's now installed in Villa Rockstar's private recording studio.
