A welcoming and laid back atmosphere is rivaled only by pleasant and warm locals.

Lamu Island's many restaurants and hotels offer a delicious assortment of delicacies and treats. Here are some of our favourites:

Peponi Hotel

Grilled calamari, stuffed with tomato and garlic chili, on top of a warm bed of white-wine risotto. For dessert, try the fabulous homemade coconut ice cream. With pieces of fresh coconut, it's creamy and unforgettable. www.peponi-lamu.com

Bush Gardens Restaurant

Steaming garlic red snapper, grilled and served with a side of freshly sliced and fried chips. Goes down well with

a cold, orange Fanta. On the promenade near the jetty.

Barracuda Rooftop Restaurant

For a quick snack, try the thick and smooth chocolate crepe with plum jam. Atop Island Hotel in Shela.

Stop Over Restaurant

Spaghetti in a spicy red sauce, covered with a mixture of seafood: calamari, shrimp, lobster and the catch of the day. Near Kijani Hotel.

On Shela Beach

Inexpensive, homemade vegetable, fish and meat samosas served by a man who walks up and down the beach, every day, selling his food and much-needed cold, bottled drinks.
