The three-hour drive from Nanaimo over the hump of Vancouver Island follows a former logging road to the Pacific Ocean and then swings north as you cruise through Pacific Rim National Park and into town. … The park has several wild beaches, some of which run for kilometres, and in fall and winter they're practically deserted. You can walk for hours and scarcely see another soul, or stand mesmerized by the crashing breakers knowing there's nothing but Pacific Ocean between you and Japan. It's magical.
