Pop goes the mall

London – The pop-up shopping craze has literally gone from boutique to big box in the city's East End. Boxpark Shoreditch, which claims to be the world's first pop-up mall, is an open-air emporium made entirely from repurposed shipping containers. Sixty stores line Shoreditch High Street and peddle everything from books and bicycles to Levi's jeans and Marimekko textiles. Stop by the Puma shop for limited edition designs by Hussein Chalayan and Rudolf Dassler and, on Thursday nights, live music and Kopparberg beer. boxpark.co.uk

The pop-up resort

Tulum - Book your cabana well in advance at this temporary beach paradise in Mexico. The Papaya Playa Project, a collaboration between Design Hotels and Emilio Heredia (owner of Papaya Playa beach resort), brings 99 eco-friendly cabanas to the white sands of Tulum only until May 5. Stretching across 900 metres of coastline, the pop-up beach camp has no-frills crash pads (a wooden hut with access to a communal bathhouse) and lavish oceanfront cabanas and casitas with private bathrooms and terraces complete with hammocks and sea views. papayaplayaproject.com

The art of recycling

Rome - Architects, urban planners and environmentalists have taken over The National Museum of XXI Century Arts. The expansive exhibit Recycle, Strategies for Architecture, City and Planet (running until April 29) features more than 80 drawings, models and design projects inspired by recycling. Notable works include Music on Bones (records by rock stars pressed onto X-ray plates). Permanent Error, an exhibit of photos depicting massive dump grounds in Ghana, is an eye-opening lesson on what happens to obsolete gadgets that can't be recycled. fondazionemaxxi.it

Thai family ties

Phuket - Angsana Laguna Phuket is the latest family-friendly addition to Laguna Phuket. With five luxury hotels, restaurants, beach clubs and 600 acres of parkland, the development is the antithesis of boutique beach hut living. Get a bamboo massage at the spa or shuttle off for 18 holes at nearby Laguna Phuket Golf Club while the little ones meet the resident baby elephants. angsana.com
