Why it's worth it: The trip explores the less-travelled part of Ethiopia offering travellers an opportunity to interact with various communities and use local businesses and locally run hotels as they explore the beehive houses of the Dorze and stop in numerous villages to meet the Ari, Karo, Murse, Hamer and Dasanech people. SUSTAINABLE IN VICTORIA

The buy: The Inn at Laurel Point in Victoria, which calls itself B.C.'s first and currently only carbon-neutral hotel, has launched a sustainable package priced from $179 a room.

The savings: $20 on the room, $15 on parking plus wine and chocolates.

The catch: The number of rooms available at this rate are limited.

Why it's worth it: The package includes overnight accommodation; hemp linens on the bed; a complimentary bottle of local wine, organic chocolates and a potted plant (opposed to cut flowers); and parking. The hotel uses organic and locally sourced food in its restaurant, hydrothermal technology heats and cools the building, housekeeping uses ecoSafe cleaning products, and glass, plastic, tin, cooking fat, batteries and toner cartridges are all recycled.
