One captivating image a day, the reason it was chosen and how you can shoot similar pictures
A man walks along a tree-lined street on a cold and hazy morning in Berlin. WHY WE PICKED IT: To place such a bold, dark line through the middle of the frame is a bold move by the photographer. But it works as the subject moves slightly away from it on one side and on the other half is nothing but the quiet stillness of the morning fog amongst the trees. Experimenting with objects in the foreground is a great way to capture some interesting images.
A People's Liberation Army officer walks down stairs with a document holder inside the Great Hall of the People where the closing ceremony for the 18th Communist Party Congress is held in Beijing. WHY WE PICKED IT: Where is he going? What awaits him when he gets there? Dramatic celestial lighting just skimming the treads on the stairs adds to the mystery; the perspective compression of a telephoto lens and perfect timing complete this strong image from a political meeting in Beijing.
Shadows of trees are cast onto a wall of the Forbidden City as a man walks past on a cold, sunny day in Beijing. WHY WE PICKED IT: Capturing the subject as he naturally moves through the frame provides a nice flow and energy to the image. The red backdrop is stunning and the lines and shadows created from the trees interesting.

WHY WE PICKED IT: The silhouetting of the subjects and shadows created turn a common sports photo into a very dynamic photo. The streak of light cutting through the middle of the frame a nice touch.
Laurie Ann Milne of Timmins, Ont., shot this beautiful picture of a park road covered in leaves for our roads assignment. The leaves and trees bring the viewer’s eye to the partially covered road and make for a great composition.
