One captivating image a day, the reason it was chosen and how you can shoot similar pictures.

Photo tip for Dec. 1: Using a wide-angle lens the photographer is able to create a fantastic image with one of the gulls taking up the majority of the top of the frame as others fill in the sky around it. Try filling the frame by getting in close to your subject with a wide-angle lens.

Photo tip for Nov. 30: Shooting straight down on this scene compresses the image using the sidewalk as a background. There are also a lot fo things palying off each other. The textures from the sidewalk, grass and brick as well as the bright colour of the umbrella and the grey of the sidewalk.

Photo tip for Nov. 29: This is a very interesting crop. By omitting the man's head and focusing on the brush and characters, the photographer is putting more importance on the graphical elements than the person. This is a good example of the details photography we're exploring in this week's assignment.

Photo tip for Nov. 28: Using the prayer flags to frame the Buddhist nun brings the readers eye into the subject of the image. Try shooting through something to frame your subject and give your image a focal point.

Photo tip for Nov. 25: Frederic Jon Mercnik stood beneath the power lines for 10 minutes, waiting for the birds to move. "Photography is all about patience," he told The Globe. The resulting photo was selected as the best submission on the theme of silhouettes. Reason: Some great angles and the repeating pattern of the birds on the wire really help this silhouette stand out. The bird in mid-flight really is the icing on the cake. Nice work waiting for just the right moment.

Each weekday, our photo editors will select one compelling image for prominent play in the newspaper. On Friday, we'll publish in the newspaper our favourite reader photo on a weekly theme. This week's assignment: Details
