One captivating image a day, the reason it was chosen and how you can shoot similar pictures.

Photo tip for Oct. 20: The photographer has backed up and taken a look around the air show and found a great angle that adds the human element to this image. Whatever event you are at don't forget to try and add the human element to you pictures. This will help readers relate to them.

Photo tip for Oct. 19: The colour in the balloons steals the scene as the light filters through them making them stand out from the rest of the image. The backlight also creates a nice silhouette with the boy and background.

Photo tip for Oct. 18: By using a large aperture the photographer is able to create a large depth of field keeping the children in the foreground and the village in the background sharp. This adds some great layering to the image and gives the reader lots to explore in the image. Try using larger apertures like f16-f22 to give your scenes more depth of field you can use to layer your pictures.

Photo tip for Oct. 17: By using a slow shutter speed the photographer is able to add a feeling of movement to the birds that are flying but still keep the birds on the wire sharp. Try using a slower shutter speed like a 15th of a second or slower to add blur to subjects that are moving.

Photo tip for Oct. 14: Neil Jones of Toronto shot this image on Oct. 9 of his Thanksgiving dinner at his cottage on Grass Lake, Haliburton Ont. He uploaded it to Flickr in response to our Thanksgiving assignment. Why we chose it: By shooting on the same level as the food, the photographer creates multiple layers of colour and texture. The shallow depth of field creates a focal point for the eye.

Each weekday, our photo editors will select one compelling image for prominent play in the newspaper. On Friday, we'll publish in the newspaper our favourite reader photo on a weekly theme. This week's assignment: Hipstamatic.
