One captivating image a day, the reason it was chosen and how you can shoot similar pictures.

Photo tip for Oct. 6: The photographer uses a shallow depth of field to keep the attention on the man walking into the tunnel as the lights on the right add tension. Try putting two different elements on either side of the image and see if they work together.

Photo tip for Oct. 5: There is a lot to look at in this image and by shooting from a high angle the photographer was able to capture all of it as well as the pattern of the prayer mats on the floor to make a very interesting image. The red and blue mat in the middle of the scene stands out and gives the reader a place to start from.

Photo tip for Oct. 4: The pattern of lines running from corner to corner help move the readers eye through the image to the shadow of the worker that also breaks up the pattern. Try looking for patterns around you and waiting for something to come into your frame to break them up.

Photo tip for Oct. 3: By shooting with a wide angle lens the photographer was able to frame the race car though an opening in the fence drawing the readers eye directly to the subject. Try shooting through something to frame your subject in your picture.

Photo tip for Sept. 30: Frederic Jon Mercnik captured this scene on his friends' porch in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, just as the sun broke through the clouds. He submitted it online in response to an assignment for photos of home. Why we chose it: This well-composed photograph captures exactly what makes your house a home. The clutter, the kids toys, the quality of being lived in – it all tells a story. Tilting the camera adds some tension and interest to an otherwise static scene.

Each weekday, our photo editors will select one compelling image for prominent play in the newspaper. On Friday, we'll publish in the newspaper our favourite reader photo on a weekly theme. This week's assignment: fall colours.
