The RCMP and the Canada Border Services Agency are poised to unveil the results of what they are calling "a significant drug seizure."
The two law enforcement agencies are remaining tight-lipped about the bust but have called a news conference at Kelowna International Airport for Tuesday morning. An RCMP press release said a 2,300-kilogram machine that was used to hide the drugs will be on display.
Contacted by phone, RCMP spokesman Constable Michael McLaughlin said the seizure is "a fairly major concern" involving "international ties."
He added that "a fairly substantial amount" of drugs was seized but he declined to say what kind.
"I can't really give too much away," he said.
This is the second major B.C. drug bust the RCMP and the CBSA have announced in a week. Last Tuesday, the two agencies, along with the Vancouver Police Department, showed off 275 kilograms of cocaine and methamphetamine worth $9-million that was seized at the Vancouver port in mid-September.
The seizure was one of the largest drug busts in B.C. history. Police said the drugs were hidden in thousands of stone bricks and cement fountains destined for a Vancouver warehouse.
