One of the three survivors from Monday's grisly plane crash into a steep hillside near Okanagan Lake died, according to the B.C. Coroners Service.
Twenty-four year-old, Surrey resident Lauren Patricia Sewell succumbed to serious injuries sustained in the accident. Her family has decided to donate her organs.
Two doctors declared Ms. Sewell brain dead late Tuesday afternoon, said Barb McLintock, a spokeswoman for the coroners service. Doctors performed the organ retrieval late Wednesday, she said.
Ms. Sewell's organ donation will provide hope for at least six other individuals and families, said chief coroner Lisa Lapointe. "Though Ms. Sewell's life has ended tragically and too soon, she has given an amazing gift to others."
She is the second of four people on the plane to die from the accident. Emergency workers found Vancouver resident Jayson Dallas Wesley Smith, 30, dead at the scene. The plane crashed into a hillside near the closed Brenda Mines near Peachland, B.C. shortly after take-off from Penticton on its way to Boundary Bay airport in Delta, B.C.
The Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the accident. The plane's gas tank was full when the accident happened, said regional manager Bill Yearwood. It is lucky the plane did not explode on impact.
Two survivors, who were airlifted to a hospital from the scene, remain in hospital with serious injuries.
