The B.C. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is recommending charges of animal cruelty against Mountain View Wildlife Conservation Centre after the deaths of three giraffes in the past two months.
The death of Jerome, an adult giraffe that recently died while having his hooves trimmed, could have been prevented, according to B.C. SPCA's general manager of cruelty investigations, Marcie Moriarty.
"Mountain View's failure to ensure that they were adequately equipped to look after animals in their care resulted in this tragedy," said Ms. Moriarty in a statement.
Ms. Moriarty feels that Mountain View should be held accountable for their actions.
Two other giraffes died in December due to a cold snap.
The B.C. SPCA will be pressing charges of animal cruelty, in hopes that Mountain View would not be able to keep these types of animals in the future.
