Susan Mitchell, missing since July 3 from Burnaby, B.C.

A single mother who vanished after putting her two children to bed has been found safe.

New Westminster police located Susan Mitchell, 30, at around 5 p.m. on Thursday. She was in medical distress but is now being treated, police said.

Ms. Mitchell became the subject of a significant Burnaby RCMP investigation after she tucked the children into bed Tuesday night and seemingly disappeared. Her children, both under seven, alerted a neighbour, who called police.

At around noon on Wednesday, she was caught on surveillance footage at a bank in the 4600-block of Kingsway. She appeared in good health and appeared unharmed at that time, police said.

On Thursday, minutes after a Burnaby RCMP news conference to announce details of the surveillance footage, New Westminster police located Ms. Mitchell.

Burnaby RCMP Staff-Sergeant Steve Crawford thanked the public and the media for their assistance.

"We try not to draw unnecessary attention or raise concern of the public," he said. "Working in hindsight, it was appreciated."

Ms. Mitchell's children were initially taken into the care of the Ministry of Children and Family Development but may now be with her immediate family.
