Teaching assistants at the University of B.C. and support staff at Vancouver Community College have served 72-hour strike notice and will begin job action on Monday.

The workers at both institutions are members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, who voted in favour of strike action to back contract demands.

In the case of the 2,300 teaching assistants, tutors and other staff at UBC, the union says mediation efforts have made virtually no progress on the union's core issues and the workers are frustrated.

Earlier this month two other CUPE locals at UBC reached new four-year contracts with two per cent wage hikes in each of the third and fourth years.

The 420 support staff represented by CUPE at Vancouver Community College have been without a contract for two years.

Their job action will begin with an overtime ban on Monday and a one-day strike on Tuesday, followed by rotating, escalating walkouts.
