Residents of White Rock, B.C., are being urged to boil their drinking water after E. coli bacteria were discovered in the water treatment system.

The Fraser Health Authority issued the notice after the contamination was detected at a residential sampling point.

The health authority says water should be boiled for at least one minute if it's to be used for drinking, brushing teeth or preparing baby formula.

Although most people may not notice symptoms of bacterial infection, anyone with bloody diarrhea or stomach pain should see a doctor.

The health authority says Epcor, the company that runs the water treatment system, has not detected the source of the contamination and that crews are testing and flushing the system.

About 80 homes in south Surrey are also affected by the boil water notice, which will remain in effect for at least one week.
