The B.C. government is contributing $113-million toward a plan to move Emily Carr University from Granville Island to Great Northern Way, Premier Christy Clark said Wednesday.

The project will cost $134-million, with the university and other donors raising the remaining $21-million.

Construction for the 26,600 square-metre campus will begin in May, 2014, and is expected to create 1,500 construction jobs before it is completed in 2016.

Eighteen-hundred students will attend classes at the new campus.

Great Northern Way is located in the False Creek Flats area of central Vancouver.

With several caucus members present, Ms. Clark announced the government's financial support for the project in an election-campaign-style announcement at the school's smaller operation on Great Northern Way.

"I am committed and my government is committed to making sure this institution becomes one of the world's greatest institutions, re: arts," Ms. Clark said.

"We want to ensure that not only does it change this neighbourhood, which it certainly will, but we change our city and our country."
