Should reporting on suicides, especially among youth, be held to a special set of standards? What guidelines for media are the right ones? And is such a set of rules realistic in the social media age?

These are some of the questions that were raised when the Vancouver School Board passed a motion to encourage media outlets to be more responsible in its reporting on suicides after high-profile cases in recent months, including the death of Amanda Todd.

On Wednesday we held a live discussion on the topic, and put reader questions to our participants: Patti Bacchus of the Vancouver School Board, SFU communications professor Kathleen Cross and Globe and Mail public editor Sylvia Stead. Read the archived discussion below and if you'd like to continue the conversation, use the comments section of this page.
