Vancouver police say a convicted criminal who was gunned down in the middle of the street in September was the victim of mistaken identity.

Rajinder Soomel, 35, was shot dead on Cambie Street in front of a halfway house near a school.

Police said Mr. Soomel was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and the gunmen's real target was staying at the same halfway house.

They aren't identifying the intended victim but said he's back in jail.

Police said they've told the man he was the target and his life could still be in danger.

After the shooting, the halfway house involved, which is run by the B.C. Borstal Association, said it would no longer accept criminals with gang ties.
