RCMP are calling off a public alert concerning a father and son from B.C. who were believed missing in Washington State.

The Mounties say 35-year-old Ian McFadden has contacted family and friends in the Victoria area after police asked yesterday for U.S. authorities to locate the pair.

Spokesman Cpl. Darren Lagan says investigators are satisfied there is no longer a need for public assistance.

Mr. McFadden and his nine-year-old son entered the U.S. via the Blaine Border Crossing early Saturday and travelled to Seattle, where they hired a taxi but then weren't heard from again.

Police received information there might be concerns for the child's well-being, while noting they weren't aware of any crimes related to the case.

Cpl. Lagan says police won't release any more information on the matter to protect the family's privacy.
