About 30 Fleetwood, Surrey homes have been evacuated because of a natural gas leak in the neighbourhood and police are continuing the evacuation while emergency workers repair the leak.

"We got the call from somebody on scene, but there was a language barrier at the time so we don't know if it was residential digging or what happened," said Surrey Fire Service Deputy Chief, Karen Fry.

Fire services have two units on scene, said Fire Chief Len Garis.

The RCMP is in charge of the evacuation. They are continuing to evacuate homes in the 16700 block of 85 Avenue, said Deputy Chief Fry. Twenty to 30 homes have already been evacuated.

"The site is secured and no major roads are closed down," she said, adding 168 Street may be closed.

Fortis B.C. workers have joined the RCMP and fire service on the scene. They are expected to repair the gas leak within an hour, said the deputy chief.
