Head for the banks of your favourite river and help honour the waterways that sustain both life and livelihoods at World Rivers Day events across B.C.

In Burnaby, celebrate the restoration of Guichon Creek, where you can learn about the improvements, take a horse and buggy ride, wander through a farmers' market, see live raptors and learn to fish. In Langley, build a bird house, talk to master gardeners, play a life-size-salmon board game, and fill up on local and organic foods.

Visitors to the Campbell River can enjoy heritage tours and guided bird walks, then take in fishing demos, kids activities, live music and more. In Salmon Arm, live music, a feast, riverside walks and blessings from First Nations elders will honour the Salmon River Delta.

Bit of a science buff? Head for Fernie's Elk River and help take water quality tests, learn about flow rates and mapping, and sample for freshwater creatures.

If river adventure is your thing, join a flotilla of canoes, kayaks and rafts as they travel 22 kilometres down the Fraser from Yale to Hope, with stops for lunch and look-arounds with local historians.

Want to give an arm of your local river a leg up? Join shoreline cleanups in Vancouver, Mission, and along the Vedder River in Chilliwack.

World Rivers Day is Sunday, but events are happening all weekend. For details, visit commons.bcit.ca/worldriversday.
