An ultralight aircraft crashed in a Surrey field early Monday, but the pilot managed to escape by deploying his parachute before impact, RCMP say.

Police said the pilot suffered minor injuries to his leg in the crash and was taken to hospital for examination.

RCMP report the ultralight came down hard in a rural area of South Surrey, not far from the King George Airpark (at King George Blvd. and Colebrook Road.)

The incident happened Monday morning, just after 8 a.m.

The plane suffered mechanical failure in flight, police said in a statement.
