RCMP confirm avalanche in B.C. kills 36-year-old Saskatchewan man

An avalanche that buried two men in B.C. has claimed the life of a 36-year-old man from Lloydminster, Saskatchewan.

Clearwater RCMP say the men were buried in a slide that occurred in the back of Red Sands Mountain near Blue River, B.C., located about halfway between Kamloops and Jasper, Alta.

Police say a group of snowmobilers were in the area and rushed to dig out the two men.

One man was immediately rescued, but the second died of his injuries.

The BC Coroners is now investigating the death.

Parks Canada also reported that a 38-year-old man from Calgary was rescued from an avalanche in Banff National Park on Saturday, but had to be airlifted to hospital in critical condition.

The man was in a group of four skiing in the Helen Shoulder glades when they triggered the slide, burying the man. Using beacons and probes, his companions had him out in 15 minutes and performed CPR until EMS arrived,

An alpine helicopter took him to Lake Louise and then a STARS helicopter transported him to Calgary.

Banff Visitor Safety said a helicopter was also brought in to evacuate an injured ice climber in his 20s near the east end of Lake Minnewanka after an emergency beacon was activated.
