Metro Vancouver health officials will review the case of a patient who was released from care only to stab an elderly man in a coffee shop.
The officials have not released the name of the patient, but 30-year-old Mohamed Amer is charged with attempted murder in an attack on Wednesday that put a 71-year-old man in hospital in serious condition.
At the time of his arrest, police said Mr. Amer had previous mental health contact with officers on the streets.
The Vancouver Coastal Health Authority and Providence Health Care say they've ordered an external, independent review of the case of the St. Paul's Hospital patient.
The organizations say the review will focus on the admission process for the hospital's mental health program, the care the patient got and the discharge process.
Providence Health Care President Dianne Doyle says she recognizes the need to address concerns raised by the case and her organization's highest priority is the health and safety of patients and the local community.
