Jim Green in Vancouver, February 17, 2009.John Lehmann/ The Globe and Mail

Former City of Vancouver councillor and tireless community activist Jim Green has died.

A news release from the mayor's office says Mr. Green passed away at 6:15 a.m. Tuesday morning at his home, with his family by his side.

The two-time mayoral candidate, veteran councillor and long-time social and housing activist on Vancouver's Downtown Eastside had been battling lung cancer.

He was awarded the Freedom of the City at an invitation-only ceremony on Sunday.

Mr. Green was honoured for his work with the Downtown Eastside Residents Association and his success in bringing social and affordable housing to the troubled neighbourhood.

Details of a public memorial service are expected to be released when they are available.
