The Stargate era is coming to an end in Vancouver. Syfy announced on Thursday that it's cancelling Stargate Universe. "Syfy will end its original action-adventure series Stargate Universe when the show returns with the final 10 episodes of its second season in the spring of 2011," a statement released by the network read. Ratings are believed to be the reason behind the cancellation.
The Stargate franchise - including Stargate, Stargate Atlantis, Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Universe - has been shooting at Bridge Studios in Burnaby, B.C. since 1994, becoming a mainstay of the Lower Mainland production scene.
The franchise has also spun off into video games, books and comics.
Stargate Universe stars Robert Carlyle ( Trainspotting) as Dr. Nicholas Rush, a scientist on the spaceship Destiny, built millions of years ago by the Ancients and programmed to take those on board to the far ends of the universe.
Syfy recently cancelled another Vancouver-shot series, the Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica.
News of the cancellation came the same day Stephanie Cadieux, B.C.'s Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, held a media briefing from Los Angeles saying things were looking bright for the B.C. film and television production industry.
