A Surrey Mountie who was killed in a traffic accident last month was speeding at the time and did not have his emergency equipment activated.
Chief Superintendent Bill Fordy provided the update on the death of Constable Adrian Oliver, 28, in a news release issued late Friday afternoon.
"The preliminary indication indicates, by way of GPS and video evidence, that Constable Oliver was attempting to locate a recently stolen pick-up truck," Chief Supt. Fordy said. "During the course of these efforts, in the moments prior to the collision, he was operating his police vehicle in excess of the posted speed limit, without his emergency equipment activated."
Const. Oliver died Nov. 13 when his unmarked police car collided with a large semi-trailer truck around 5 a.m. at the intersection of 148th Street and 64th Avenue in Surrey's Newton neighbourhood.
Emergency responders freed the unconscious officer from his vehicle and transported him to hospital, but he did not survive.
The driver of the truck has been provided with the updates, Surrey RCMP say.
The Surrey RCMP Criminal Collision Investigation Team continues to investigate the crash with external oversight by the Vancouver Police Department.
Const. Oliver comes from a family of Mounties, with his father, twin brother and common-law spouse also members of the force.
