Celebrate: It's Diwali time. The South Asian festival of light is on all week, and lots of cool workshops, events and performances are planned throughout the city. Expect live music, fashion shows, traditional diya lamp painting, henna tattooing, and the occasional explosion of Bollywood-style dance. We recommend The West End Community Centre on Friday for some great workshops, and the Indian bazaar (full of South Asian crafts and lots of food) at Yaletown's Roundhouse Community Centre on Saturday. Photography: Capture, a city-wide photography festival aimed at showcasing "lens-based art," displays more than 55 exhibitions by emerging and established artists from here and around the world. Complimenting the visual component of the festival are tours, talks and workshops open to the public. This week, we recommend "The Photo Show: 1969/2013 – Exploring the Photo Conceptual Archive" at UBC's new Art History and Visual Art Gallery. Shots in this exhibition were taken by Vancouver artists (Illyas Pagonis, Jeff Wall, Ian Wallace, Iain Baxter and Chris Dikeakos) when they were students at UBC's Department of Fine Arts in the late 1960s. Learn: Homesteader's Emporium wants to show you how easy it is to make cheese at home. Attend a 90-minute drop-in session for beginners this weekend to find out just how easy. Learn the process and get answers to questions like "what is rennet, how does milk curdle, is a little mould on my cheese okay?" Emporium owner and amateur cheese maker Rick Havlak will also make a variety of fresh and aged cheeses before your eyes. Design: If you're interested in the rise of the "small home" and the growing popularity of laneway homes as a viable housing solution in this city, you will want to go to the Museum of Vancouver for Design on Sunday, where interior design educator Brenda Snaith leads a talk called "Laneway Homes: Emergent Evolutions, for compact living and sustainability." MOV has asked Ms. Snaith to look at aspects of small-housing design using submissions from the 2013 IDSWest student charrette (designs that resulted after teams were allotted six hours to create, develop laneway housing and prepare presentations).
