Craft: Pick up the first steps in the craft of making your own sake at the Homesteader's Emporium. Learn the basics about equipment and ingredients, how to prepare rice for making sake, which sanitizing precautions to use, how the fermentation process takes place and how to adjust your sake for taste. Get all of that information and a sake-making starter kit (containing koji, sake kasu, rice, a one-litre mason jar and a cheesecloth) and leave with a sample of your efforts for only $40.

Think: Genetically modified crops such as corn, soy and canola constitute a large portion of our diets in Canada already. As the trend continues, it's important to think about the implications of increased engineering on our diet, environment and economy. If you are curious about this topic, sit in on a cross-Canada speakers' tour on genetically engineered foods featuring presentations by Dr. Thierry Vrain (retired soil biologist and genetic engineer) and Dr. Shiv Chopra (former Health Canada senior scientific adviser) at the Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability at the University of British Columbia.

Thursday, Nov. 21, 2-4 p.m., Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability, gefreebc.wordpress.com

Laugh: The folks at Rain City Chronicles believe everyone has a great personal story to tell, and they create opportunities to share them. Rain City's run of storytelling in unique venues continues with two evenings of school-related tales taking place on school grounds (one in an elementary school gym and the other in a high school auditorium). Both storytelling events come complete with a fancy version of a cafeteria-style dinner. Arrive early, grab a plastic tray, line up and choose one of four reinterpretations of the classic lunch-time specials from your school days (think shepherd's pie, sloppy joes, mac 'n' cheese and pizza). Rain City always sells out, but don't miss out.

Thursday, Nov. 21, 6 p.m., Strathcona Elementary School, Friday, Nov. 22, 6 p.m., Templeton Secondary, raincitychronicles.com

Housing the arts: Roll up your sleeves and get a little messy with a grown-up evening of art and creativity.
