Listen: The Emerson String Quartet plays the Vancouver Playhouse on Sunday. The evening's program includes works by Haydn (Quartet in C Major, Opus 76 No. 3 Emperor); Bartok (Quartet No. 4 Sz. 91) and a little Dvorak (American, Opus 96). That sounds like a pretty relaxing Sunday afternoon right there.

Jan. 31, 3-5 p.m., Vancouver Playhouse (600 Hamilton St.), $48, friendsofchambermusic.ca

Perspective: Dreams Rewired is playing at the Cinematheque this week. The documentary essay narrated by actress Tilda Swinton traces the aspirations and fears of today's hyper-connected world back more than 100 years to reveal some interesting points and curious parallels. The movie includes clips from some 200 films dating from the 1880s to the 1930s – slapstick comedies, documentaries, avante-garde works, animated instructional films and propaganda newsreels.

Jan. 29-Feb. 3, various times, Cinematheque (1131 Howe St.), $11, thecinematheque.ca

Theatre: Put on your proper, theatre-going duds and head down to a South Granville institution for a spot of Jane Austen. Yup,

Pride and Prejudice opens at the Stanley Theatre this week. You know the drill: intelligent and headstrong Elizabeth Bennett encounters dark, brooding and excessively wealthy Mr. Darcy. Initially unimpressed, Miss Bennet navigates her way through a series of misunderstandings until she eventually finds she may have misjudged the man and, more important, her own feelings for him.

Jan. 28-Feb. 28, various times, Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage (2750 Granville St.), artsclub.com

Community: The fifth annual A Journey Into Islam exhibition and open house is at the Az-Zahraa Islamic Centre on Saturday night. The evening, which is hosted by the youth of the centre, is intended to create a comfortable environment that encourages guests to engage with the Islamic community centre to ask questions and do away with misconceptions. Expect exhibits, guided tours, demonstrations, short talks and traditional food.

Jan. 30, 5:30-10 p.m., Az-Zahraa Islamic Centre (8580 No. 5 Rd., Richmond), ajourneyintoislam.org

Birds of a feather: Get bundled up on Sunday to take a guided walk in Stanley Park to explore the varied and beautiful winter bird life. From the chilly waters of Lost Lagoon to the moss-covered trees near Prospect Point, you would be surprised at how many species of birds call our big green space home during the winter. Learn how to identify them, and hear a little bit about what they do while they are here.

Jan. 31, 9-11 a.m., Lost Lagoon Nature House, Stanley Park, stanleyparkecology.ca
