Police in British Columbia's central interior have three people in custody after a wild car chase during which shots were fired.

The chase began around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in West Kelowna and ended more than 50 kilometres away just outside of Vernon.

RCMP were trying to force a green Dodge Caravan to pull over to the side of the road when the driver refused and someone in the car fired shots at the officers.

The suspects changed vehicles during the pursuit.

RCMP Const. Kris Clark says a high-powered rifle was used in the incident.

No officers were hurt, but a woman arrested at the scene has been sent to hospital with undetermined injuries.

Police in the Okanagan are turning the investigation over to the New Westminster Police Department.
