Travelling by ferry to and from Gabriola Island, off Nanaimo, B.C., got a lot more complicated late Thursday night.

A paving truck fell into the water as it worked overnight at the Nanaimo harbour terminal, damaging the trestle required to load the ferry, which runs between Gabriola and Nanaimo.

B.C. Ferries says the driver of the truck is okay and escaped his rig as it sank, but the trestle will require major repairs.

Cars bound for Gabriola will now be loaded at the Duke Point ferry terminal, south of Nanaimo, while a water taxi will carry foot passengers between Nanaimo harbour and Gabriola.

B.C. Ferries will post updated details on its website as it works out the schedules for both the water taxi and car ferry.

There's no word how long it will take to fix the damaged trestle.
