out there: trout lake farmers market

Trout Lake Market. Big Vancouver farmers market kicks off market season.

Skip the supermarket frenzy and celebrate the unofficial start of summer by picking up fresh fruits, veggies, meats, cheeses, breads, tasty prepared foods, herbs, flowers and more at the 18th annual Trout Lake Farmers Market.

The oldest and largest of its kind, the market draws foodies from across the Lower Mainland who relish the opportunity to buy locally-grown foods, meet growers, and soak in the celebratory atmosphere. It also benefits local producers, who get the chance to sell their wares and meet their customers.

Other farmers markets in Kits, the West End, Main Street and Kerrisdale start in the coming weeks – but this weekend the Trout Lake market will give a taste of things to come.

"There's a lot of excitement in the market on opening day," says operations manager Roberta La Quaglia. "Usually there's a big cheer when we ring the bell – and it's supposed to be a sunny day Saturday, so it will be perfect kickoff to the season."

The Trout Lake Market runs Saturdays through October 20 (eatlocal.org ).
