The Vancouver Art Gallery has announced the acquisition of new works by internationally renowned photographer Jeff Wall, Chinese artist Song Dong, and Coast Salish artist Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun.
The new works include what is commonly referred to as Wall's Ivan Sayers Photograph (actual title: Vancouver, 7 Dec. 2009. Ivan Sayers, costume historian, lectures at the University Women's Club. Virginia Newton-Moss wears a British ensemble c. 1910, from Sayers' collection). The acquisition brings the VAG's collection of Wall's work to thirteen, the largest Wall collection in a public museum.
Song Dong's Fill in the Sea marks the gallery's first acquisition of his work for the permanent collection (his Waste Not was installed at the VAG in 2010 and early 2011). The 168 photograph installation was created to mark the 1997 handover of Hong Kong to China.
Yuxweluptun's monumental painting Burying Another Face of Racism on First Nations Soil has been donated to the gallery by Michael Audain and Yoshiko Karasawa. The 4.8 metre tall canvas was recently installed at the gallery as part of the exhibition Shore, Forest and Beyond: Art from the Audain Collection.
