A man has been arrested after police say a vehicle struck and killed an elderly woman who was walking on a highway northwest of Toronto.

Provincial police say Chandrowci Basdeo, 82, of Vaughan, Ont., was struck by an SUV on Highway 400 at about 4 a.m. Thursday while walking along the southbound lanes (south of King Road).

Her family says Basdeo was last seen Wednesday night, that she was struggling with Alzheimer's disease and had wandered away from home before.

It's alleged the vehicle that struck her did not remain at the scene.

Police say a suspect turned himself and his vehicle in to police later Thursday and was arrested.

The name of the accused has not been released but police say he is a 40-year-old man from Bradford who is to be charged with failing to stop at a scene of a motor vehicle collision involving death.

He's due in court Friday for a bail hearing.
