The movements of Lydia the shark.Trish McAlaster/The Globe and Mail

Lydia, the great white shark that surprised many with a trip into Newfoundland and Labrador's Placentia Bay last fall, has crossed a mid-Atlantic trough.

American researchers tagged the shark off Florida last March and since that time have tracked her epic journey.

That trip took her as far north as Merasheen Island in Placentia Bay last October before she began heading east out into the North Atlantic.

As she neared the halfway point across the Atlantic, some speculated she might head for Europe but it now appears that Lydia has turned south and is travelling to warmer waters in the Caribbean or off the coast of South America.

Scientists say she's the first great white to be tracked so far away, with many of the other sharks in the research group sticking relatively close to the area where they were originally tagged.

Her movements can be tracked here.
