Police have arrested a suspect in the slaying of an Alberta man who disappeared more than seven years ago.

Robin Douglas Goodwin, who was 45, was last seen alive on Sept. 22, 2006, at the mining business where he worked in Nisku, just south of Edmonton.

DNA analysis confirmed that human remains discovered just over a year later northeast of Edmonton near Hilliard belonged to him.

Goodwin's death was ruled a homicide and the RCMP's major crimes unit continued the investigation.

Michael Jay Hook, who is 51 and from the Edmonton area, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with second-degree murder.

He is to appear in Vegreville provincial court next week.

Goodwin's sister, Mary Matchett, says the last years have been difficult for the family.

"Sadly our parents are not here today to see [the] arrest," she said in a statement released by the RCMP. "We miss Robin every day."

She and the family are asking for privacy.
