A botched home invasion in Mississauga has left one man dead, and police are trying to figure out who killed him and what he was doing there.
Ibrahim Abukar, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene when police arrived at the Corkstone Glade home shortly after 12:25 a.m. Friday morning. The two young men with him fled.
Police say at least two of the three young men were armed, but don't know what they carried, whether Mr. Abukar was armed or who shot him. They don't know whether any of the three knew homeowner Mike Vrga, who lives there with his wife and young children, or the tenant renting his basement apartment.
"That's what we're trying to figure out right now. … Who was the actual person that was targeted?" said Peel Police Constable Fiona Thivierge. "Right now, it's deemed to be random." Police don't yet know whether they'll press charges in Mr. Abukar's death.
"It's kind of complicated," Constable Thivierge said. "Was the homeowner threatened at the time? … I'm not going to comment on why they would or would not lay charges until they make that determination."
Amid an ongoing forensic investigation to analyze gunshots and spent casings to determine how many guns there were and where they were fired, police are also looking for the two apparent accomplices who fled.
"We need witnesses to come forward, to tell us … even the smallest thing: You're outside walking your dog, you see a car drive by, and it could be a car these two got into. We need the public's assistance in doing that."
