Ontario's police watchdog has been called in to investigate the shooting of a man in Oshawa by Durham Regional Police on Wednesday.
According to preliminary information gathered by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), a man who Durham police was investigating entered a business in the downtown area of King Street East and Charles Street around 1:20 a.m.
Officers set up a post outside and, about an hour later, the man drove his vehicle out of the business, the SIU said. He was shot "following an interaction with the police," the SIU said. No other details about the shooting were released.
The man suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is being treated in a hospital. Durham police said no officers were injured in the incident. The SIU has assigned six investigators and five forensic investigators to examine the circumstances of the shooting. The area will remain blocked off until the investigation is complete.
An independent agency, the SIU is required to investigate whenever police are involved in the death or serious injury of a public citizen. The agency, which has the authority to lay criminal charges, also investigates sex assault allegations against officers.
