RCMP released the names yesterday of a couple slain in their quiet rural B.C. home on Monday, deaths police are treating as a targeted double-homicide.

Police were called to an acreage on Greenwood Drive, northwest of Mission, around 4:45 p.m. on Monday for reports of two people in medical distress. Inside, they found a gruesome scene - the badly injured Lisa Cheryl Dudley, 37, and the dead body of her live-in partner, 33-year-old Guthrie Jolan McKay.

Paramedics attempted to revive Ms. Dudley, who had been shot, but she died in an air ambulance heading to hospital.

RCMP said yesterday the couple had been living in the home in which they were found, and called their deaths "a targeted murder."

A friend of Mr. McKay's said in an e-mail yesterday the man met Ms. Dudley less than two years ago, and had been married to another woman at the time.

Mr. McKay and Ms. Dudley, both of whom were avid motorcyclists, began seeing each other soon after. The friend, who did not want his name published, said Mr. McKay had worked as a skilled labourer, and had spent less time with his friends since getting together with Ms. Dudley about one year ago.

Mr. McKay was a "funny guy, always laughing, competitive," who did not have a history of violence, the friend said.

Autopsies are scheduled for later this week. Police will say only that Ms. Dudley had "a gunshot injury," but haven't said how she died. No details about Mr. McKay's death are being released. RCMP Corporal Dale Carr said the police strategy, dubbed "holdback," is to withhold information so that any public tips, or even confessions, can easily be identified as legitimate.

No arrests have been made.
