Provincial police believe a fatal shootout Friday involving at least five men east of Ottawa is linked to a marijuana grow operation.

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kristine Rae said police responding to a shooting found one man dead and two other men critically injured at a rural residence near Alexandria around 3 p.m. Friday.

"Preliminary investigation by the OPP indicates that a marijuana grow operation was involved," Sgt. Rae said.

"We do have two adult males that are in police custody and police did locate a firearm at the scene," she said.

A massive police presence was still in the area late Friday night.

"OPP helicopter, emergency response team including canine, uniform officers, and detectives are still at the scene securing and clearing the area.' said Sgt. Rae.

Sgt. Rae said it was too early to say if there's any possible link to organized crime.

"Until we get into the investigation we're not going to know that at this point." she said.
