UBC faculties to set application benchmarks
Applicants to UBC next year will have to meet new standards in 2014 when the university will demand minimum marks in some high-school courses. Faculties will be free to choose the courses in which they expect a certain level of performance to be met. The marks, however, will be set at a level lower than that of the overall average. Students whose marks are under 70 per cent are already not considered for entry.
U.S. universities could face multiple cuts
Provincial budget woes in Canada are leading to cuts to university budgets but none quite so drastic as those potentially facing American universities. Unless the U.S. postpones federal budget reductions expected to take effect on Friday, universities, colleges and research foundations will be dealing with cuts of almost 10 per cent to their budgets. Thousands of research positions may be eliminated and the number of research assistants at universities reduced. Even student grants and work-study programs could suffer.
International student numbers pass 100,000
The number of international students entering Canada has reached over 100,000 according to numbers from the federal government. The landmark number represents a 60 per cent increase since 2004. A report last year called for a doubling in the number of international students within 10 years.
