If Tim Hudak is elected Ontario premier, he would legislate more responsibilities for the province's teachers, including an obligation to stay after class and give students extra help.

The Progressive Conservative leader blasted teachers' unions Monday for refusing to perform voluntary services – such as running sports teams and school clubs – in their ongoing battle with Queen's Park.

"A teacher's relationship with her students is unique… and it goes past 3 p.m.," he said, standing in a community centre in Flemingdon Park, a suburban neighbourhood of high-rise apartment blocks.

His proposed changes to the law would make it harder for teachers to stage work-to-rule actions, by adding such things as report card preparation and after-hours parent-teacher interviews to their job descriptions.

The province and its public school teachers have been locked in a battle since the two sides failed to reach an agreement on a new contract and the Liberal government imposed one earlier this year.
